Vous avez dit surréaliste ?
Galerie Berthet-Aittouarès invites visitors to immerse themselves in the collection of Georges Goldfayn (1933-2019). A close associate of André Breton from the 1950s, he became secretary of the A l'Etoile scellée gallery, run by Breton, between 1952 and 1956. By reconstructing his living space and his collection of Oceanic art and Surrealist pieces, this exhibition pays tribute to his keen eye as a collector and insider of the movement. It focuses on two major artworks by the poet and photographer Jindrich Heisler (1938-1953). Saved from the Gestapo by Toyen and Jindrich Styrsky, key figures in Czech Surrealism, Heisler fled Prague and took refuge with Toyen in Paris, where he died in 1953. His work came to public attention thanks to the retrospective organised by the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012. Rajak Ohanian, a friend of Georges Goldfayn who died in 2023, is also on show, with his work on the metamorphosis of the tree. In a different vein, period photographs of Elisa Breton recall the Surrealist meetings at André Breton's home in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. There's also an erotic photo-montage by Pierre Molinier, a vintage graffiti by Brassai and other little treasures to discover... and buy.
