JEAN-PAUL RIOPELLE

BIOGRAPHY
Jean-Paul Riopelle was a Canadian painter, printmaker and sculptor who was born in Montreal in 1923 and died in 2002 in Saint-Antoine-de-l'Isle-aux-Grues.
At an early age, he began taking drawing classes with Montreal artist Henri Bisson. Trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, he took part in the first exhibition of the Automatistes group before moving to Paris, where he frequented the Surrealists.
With his centenary in 2023, a number of events have taken place, including an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou and major Canadian museums.
