"I don't want to impose a reading, I invite you to contemplate a waking dream space". More accustomed to large-scale installations in museums and gardens, where each of his artworks dialogue with the space (as in 2023, at the Keramis ceramics centre in La Louvrière, Belgium), it is rare to find Daniel Pontoreau's sculptures in galleries. And yet his subject matter is wonderfully appealing, with his ochre-skinned terracotta steles, his balanced assemblages of stones, and his refined landscapes in white porcelain. The 77-year-old artist, who lives between France and Africa, purifies his forms, praises the raw material and invents a poetic space, at the crossroads of oriental sculpture and arte povera.
